AT THE time I played Waterville I was in the middle of a not-so- streak which saw me lose a ball on the first hole of each course I played. Waterville proved no exception.
Yet despite the initial setback at this stunning links layout, Waterville treated me kindly and I thoroughly enjoyed my game there. Being situated in the south west of Ireland Waterville lived up to the Irish tradition of being wet and cold, although the shot of the 17th above manages to show a benign, and weather friendly view of this picturesque par 3.
If anonymity is something you need on occasion then perhaps Waterville Golf Club is a place to consider. The manger related to me the story that a gentleman and friends had quietly enjoyed the peace and solitude offered in the clubhouse. When it was pointed out that Hugh Grant had been unobtrusively enjoying the club’s fare in the corner of the bar the staff were taken aback they had not noticed him.
I can’t really recommend Waterville for a regular dose of star spotting, but it is one of the true gems of golf in the south west of Ireland, and well worth the visit. Ø
